The Xavier University was founded in 1933 by the superior of the Philippine Jesuit mission. The institution became a casualty of World War II and was reopened in 1946. In 1958, it was granted university status and changed its name from Ateneo de Cagayan to Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan in honor of St. Francis Xavier. It offers programs from pre-school to post-graduate studies.
